A hard freeze on top of wet snow is what brings ponderosa limbs down across the older streets of Greenacres, and Stump & Grind's crew — usually called out to grind a dead stump, not clear a driveway — spends those mornings dealing with exactly the kind of debris it knows best. There's an odd logic to it: the same saw that takes out a stump in July cuts a fallen limb off a buried driveway in January, and the same trucks that haul away grindings haul off plowed snow. This end of the valley rarely gets the heavy wet snow that clogs a plow blade — what falls tends to freeze hard and hold, which is why ice, not slush, is the real hazard under an old pine canopy. Getting a homeowner's car free again, limb by limb and shovelful by shovelful, before the morning commute, is its own kind of work. By the time the sun's up over the valley, the driveway's clear and the wood's stacked at the curb, waiting on spring for the grinder.
