Spokane Valley's cold can hold dry for a week or more without a single thaw between storms, so a commercial lot plowed at 4 a.m. needs to hold clear through a full day of shoppers pulling in and out. Plowing a lot you painted yourself takes its own kind of know-how — knowing where the curb cuts sit under the drifts, where the cart corrals hide. The trucks push the snow into corner piles by first light, salt goes down along the walkways, and by the time the first store flips its sign to open, the lot reads as clean as it did back in July. It's the same eye for a straight line, just working in white instead of paint.
