South Cle Elum lies on the south bank of the Yakima River, a small railroad town that grew up around the Milwaukee Road, whose old depot and rail yard remain part of its story. Today the former rail line carries the Palouse to Cascades State Park Trail, and walkers and cyclists pass within sight of the backyards.
