The farm rows out along the Snohomish floodplain hold a different kind of quiet under a skiff of snow than they do under the valley's usual rain, every furrow suddenly outlined instead of soaked flat. Commonwealth Farmscapes & Design shapes those same fields and garden beds most of the year, and when winter leaves snow instead of mud, the crew turns to clearing the farm lanes and gravel drives leading up to them. Courtyards and garden paths get swept and salted so the beds underneath aren't trampled getting to them. A blocked farm lane in December can cost a property owner the whole week, even in a valley built more around rain than real snow. Once the thaw returns, the ground goes back to being the soft, workable dirt this valley is known for.
