On a clear cold morning the Cascade foothills stand white over the Snohomish valley, close enough that the snowline looks like it might slide down into town by afternoon. It rarely does — this valley trades mostly in rain — but Bigfoot Contracting keeps plow blades mounted through the winter for the mornings it does. Driveways and small commercial lots around town get cleared first, then walkways get a pass of salt so the ice doesn't linger past sunrise. The same crew that spends the rest of the year on additions and remodels swaps the framing square for a plow blade on those mornings. By midweek the mountains usually pull the clouds back over themselves and the valley returns to its ordinary rain.
