A dog doesn't understand a snow day, and around Poulsbo the walkers at Kitsap Paw Patrol keep to their routes along the waterfront boardwalk and the residential streets behind downtown no matter what the morning looks like — which means someone has to clear a path before the leashes go on. The crew treats a client's front walk and driveway apron the same way they'd treat any stretch of the route: cleared wide enough for a dog and a person walking side by side, ice-free where a set of paws could slip on a step. Liberty Bay's damp air means what does fall rarely lasts, but a slick half-inch on a wooden boardwalk plank is enough to end a walk early, and clearing it is as much a part of the job as the leash itself. By the time the first walk of the day starts, the path is bare and the dog, at least, has no idea anything happened overnight.
