Agate is barely more than a crossroads south of Shelton, a scatter of houses along quiet backroads where a cold morning can go unnoticed by most of the county. MARTÍN Landscaping works those backroads early, before the frost has any reason to lift, clearing driveways down to gravel and laying salt along the short, steep pitches that catch ice first out there. There's little traffic to warm the pavement on roads like these, so a driveway cleared at sunrise can still need a second pass by midmorning. The work is plain and steady, one gravel drive after another along roads that don't see much else happen on a weekday. By the time the frost finally gives up for the day, Agate looks about the same as it always does, just clear underfoot.
