State Route 20 climbs out of Sedro-Woolley toward the North Cascades, and the higher it goes the more winter has a say — snow that never touches the valley floor can close a logging road above Lyman by noon. Janicki Logging & Construction runs the same heavy equipment that hauls timber all year to push that snow off access roads and job sites once the weather turns, keeping a route open for the crews and trucks that still need to reach the timber. It's a different kind of work than clearing a driveway: longer stretches, steeper grades, snow that can be a foot deep at one bend and bare gravel at the next as the road drops back toward the river. There's a plainspoken pride in keeping a mountain road passable through a storm that would otherwise strand a crew for a week, in knowing every switchback well enough to judge where the plow blade needs to lift. When the road opens back up and the log trucks roll through again, the valley below is usually still just wet, the snow a story from higher ground.
