Ballard mornings arrive as fog off Salmon Bay, thick enough to soften the masts down at the fishing terminal. West Edge Landworks starts early in it — blades wet, grass heavy, the first pass cut across a lawn while the neighborhood is still half asleep. Mowing, edging along the sidewalk seams, trimming the corners no mower can reach, hauling out what comes off: the list is plain and the result is not. By afternoon the marine layer lifts, sun comes through over the locks, and the shaggy rectangle of seven o'clock has turned into a sharp one. That is the whole trade, repeated up the blocks of Ballard, Fremont and Magnolia, week after week through the green months.
