Late October at Seward Park, the maples turn the whole peninsula gold and every lawn in Rainier Beach is buried by Sunday. Santos Landscaping shows up for the long haul of it — leaves off the grass, out of the beds, loaded and gone, and the lawn mowed once more before the rains take charge. The lake lies flat and steel-colored past the trees while the raking goes on. Other months bring mowing, edging, hedge trimming, weeding, mulch and feeding right through the growing season. There is a particular pleasure in the last pass, when the grass reappears whole.
