Queen Anne's hill streets are steep enough that a light freeze turns them dangerous long before flatter parts of the city notice anything's wrong, and this plowing crew is usually out working those grades before most of the hill's lights come on. The truck runs the same routes storm after storm — down the steepest blocks first, then out along the side streets where cars are parked nose to curb on an incline. Streetlights on Queen Anne still throw long shadows across the plowed lanes at that hour, the rest of the city just a dark grid down below the hill. Ice on a grade like that doesn't need much depth to matter; a thin sheet is enough to send a car sliding, so the plow makes more than one pass on the worst blocks. By full daylight the hill's steepest streets are bare pavement again, salt crystals the only sign a truck came through before anyone else was awake.
