The Puyallup River delta keeps Fife's low ground soft and wet most of the year, the kind of dirt this yard and pest control company knows from underneath, tunnel by tunnel, long before any cold snap turns it to ice. When that ground freezes and a rare snow sits on top of it, the same crew that spends the rest of the year reading a lawn for mole runs is out reading driveways for the first slick patch instead. Tideflat fog holds on late over the flatlands here, longer than it does farther inland, and it's usually still around when the last walkway gets shoveled clear. Fife's old blueberry-field soil holds water and then ice longer than higher ground nearby, so some driveways get a second pass, once at first light and again after the sun's had a try at it. By the second pass the ground's gone quiet again, no sign of anything moving under it or on top.
