The first cut of the year up near Haller Lake usually lands in March, on a Tuesday when the ground finally holds a boot without giving. Solution landascaping begins there — grass brought down gradually, moss raked out of the north side, soil opened with aeration and sown back to seed, then fed to wake it all up. From that point it runs weekly into October: mowing, edging, string trimming, hedges shaped, beds weeded and mulched. Bitter Lake and the streets around it grow flat, wet lawns that want drainage-minded mowing more than anything elaborate. Start the season properly and the yard carries itself the rest of the way.
