April in Montlake means the Arboretum is loud with color and every yard within a mile is trying to catch up. Ecoyards works those blocks between the cut and the lake — mowing and edging as the growth takes off, weeding and mulching beds, shaping shrubs, thinning back what the wet winter piled on. Sword ferns and salal do half the design work in this city; the other half is keeping the lawn crisp enough that all that green reads as intentional. Spring here is a race, and the yards on a regular visit stay ahead of it. Come May the grass is dense, the beds are clean, and the whole lot looks like it was planned that way.
