Along the edge of Soaring Eagle Regional Park, the second-growth conifers stand thick enough that a winter storm can drop a limb without anyone hearing it fall until they're backing out of the driveway the next morning. This crew works those calls — climbing in, cutting the broken wood down section by section, clearing the path back to the road. Evenings on the plateau in late winter go a deep blue fast, the park's tree line turning to silhouette while a chainsaw finishes its last cut of the day. Sammamish homes back up against enough forest that the work rarely feels far from the trees themselves; it's less about clearing a lot than about giving a driveway back its shape after the woods pushed something into it. A cleared drive at dusk, porch light already on, is about as plain a marker of a day's work as there is.
