Ridgefield sits right against its own national wildlife refuge, and in the deep of winter the sandhill cranes that come south to spend the season there fill the bottomland fog with a sound most towns never hear before dawn — a low, rolling call that carries over the frosted fields as Marak Landscape & Construction starts its first pass of the morning. The properties out here back up against refuge land or the Lake River itself, long rural driveways that catch the same river-bottom fog that rolls in overnight and freezes hard by the time anyone's up. Marak clears those lanes and the walks up to the door before the morning commute into Vancouver starts, working through fog thick enough that the cranes are heard well before they're seen. It's slower going than a plain subdivision street — longer driveways, more gravel than asphalt, ice that hides under a skin of frost rather than announcing itself — but getting a rural Ridgefield property clear before first light matters just as much as it does downtown. By the time the fog burns off the refuge, the driveways it touched are already bare.
