Where the Cedar River finally lets go of its current and spreads into Lake Washington, Renton's industrial south end runs on trucks — recycling yards, scrap lots, loading bays that need to open on schedule no matter what the sky is doing. MCS Recycle keeps its own yard and the routes leading into it clear through the winter, plowing gravel and asphalt alike so the trucks can back in without sliding. It's a different kind of snow work than a quiet cul-de-sac: heavier equipment, wider passes, drainage grates to keep clear so meltwater doesn't just refreeze into black ice by afternoon. The yard sits low and close to the water, and the cold gathers there before it reaches the hill neighborhoods a mile off. Getting ahead of it means starting before light, so the first truck of the day rolls in on bare ground.
