From the oyster beds along Quilcene Bay, the water almost never freezes, but look up past the tideflats and the Olympic peaks holding the valley's back stay white long after the lowland snow has melted off. NW Tree & Excavation works the ground in between, driveways cut back through stands of fir and hemlock where a hard winter storm off the canal can drop enough snow to block a lane for days, even while Highway 101 down at the water stays merely wet. Clearing those lanes means moving both snow and whatever timber a storm has knocked loose overhead, since out here the two arrive together more often than not. The excavation equipment built for grading a driveway pad in summer turns out to handle a deep drift just as readily come winter. There's a particular stillness working that forest edge, canal mist below and mountain snow above, with only the sound of the blade and a river running somewhere close by.
