Winter around Fort Lewis is not white so much as green and dripping, cedar shade over the Sequalitchew ravine and a soft rain that can last a week without ever quite arriving. Room to Grow Designs keeps working through it, because grass here barely stops, and a yard left alone from November to March grows into something else entirely. There are mild-week mowings, needle and branch cleanup after a blow comes through, and edges recut so the walks do not disappear under creeping turf. A lawn tended in the grey months is ready the first warm Saturday, without a month of catching up. Somebody has to keep the shape of the place while the weather is busy erasing it.
