Clarks Creek runs quiet through the middle of Puyallup, past yards LandCare has shaped for lawns and hedges most of the year, and on a February afternoon a line of squalls can drop an inch of snow along those same streets in under an hour. It's a different kind of shaping, instead of a hedge line, a clean edge along a sidewalk, cut back before the evening commute turns the roads to slush. The crews know these residential blocks well enough to move fast: which driveways slope toward the street, which yards drain toward the creek and ice first. A squall like that rarely lasts, but the streets it leaves behind stay slick until somebody clears them, and there's a real satisfaction in getting a walkway safe again before the porch lights start coming on for the night. By dusk, with the creek running high and dark under its footbridges, the block is passable again.
