The Puyallup Valley floor was built for bulbs and berries, flat, rich ground turned over every season for daffodils and blackberries, and on the rare morning it wears a skin of frost or true snow, the fields go a plain, even white before the day's heat has a chance to touch it. Franky's Excavation runs its equipment out across those farm lanes and open lots at first light, blades scraping snow off ground normally reserved for a tractor's tires. Heavy machinery built for moving earth turns out to move snow just as well, and clearing a wide farm access road in one pass beats a dozen trips with a shovel. Working that open ground means working exposed, with the fog off the river still hanging low and the foothills only a gray suggestion past the fields. By the time that fog lifts and the frost gives way to bare dirt again, the lane is already open for whatever truck needs it next.
