Late August, and the light over McCormick Woods stays gold until almost nine. Rooted Landscaping takes the evening rounds then — mowing, trimming, bed edging, the shrubs shaped back before the fall rains arrive to make everything sprawl again. The name is no accident: the work starts underneath, in soil that runs from glacial gravel to heavy clay depending on which side of Old Clifton you happen to be standing on. A lawn cut at the right height in this valley will hold its color long past the point where its neighbors give up. Ending the day with the mower loaded and the yard glowing in the last of the sun is a fair way to make a living.
