Rainbow Sweepers spends the fall working downtown and waterfront parking lots against the bigleaf maple leaves that come down by the ton along the Olympic Discovery Trail, sweeping the same stretches of pavement week after week until the last tree finally goes bare. When the calendar turns from leaves to the rare chance of snow, the sweeper trucks don't change lots, just tools — the same downtown lots, the same waterfront turnouts, cleared with a blade instead of a brush. A parking lot iced over under old leaf litter is worse than either problem alone, so the crew that already knows exactly where every drain and speed bump sits in a given lot has an edge nobody starting from scratch would. Most of the work stays close to downtown and out toward the fairgrounds, in lots that fill up regardless of season. By the time real winter arrives, the trucks are usually back to sweeping again, since Port Angeles rarely holds snow long enough to need more than a pass or two.
