About Wolbert's Plant Essentials Inc.

West of Olympia the land breaks into fingers of forest and saltwater — Mud Bay, Cooper Point, the long road out to Steamboat Island — and madronas lean red over the tideline. Wolbert's Plant Essentials Inc. looks after lawns along those roads, where turf runs into deep fir shade at one end of a yard and wide-open Sound light at the other. Grass behaves like two different plants in those two halves, and knowing it is most of the craft: the height it gets cut, the trim line kept honest around trunks, the border held firm against a gravel drive. On an August evening out there the mowed grass goes silver in the low sun, and that is a good way to leave a place.
