Snow doesn't often reach the South Sound, but when it does, the timber above these back roads holds it in shadow long after town has thawed, and a switchback driveway under that canopy can stay slick for days. The crew plows and shovels a path wide enough for a truck loaded with firewood or a school bus turning around at the end of a long gravel lane, working outward from the cul-de-sacs near the edge of Capitol Forest toward the scattered houses tucked further into the trees. There's no shortcut out here; every driveway is its own small negotiation with the hill it sits on, but a packed-down lane by mid-morning means nobody's stuck at the top of their own property. By afternoon, sun finally finds its way through the branches, and the plowed gravel starts to show through the last of the melt.
