Down where the Deschutes River drops over Tumwater Falls in a permanent hush of spray, the old brewery smokestacks still mark the neighborhood decades after the beer stopped brewing, and it's here that Sta-Built Construction, LLC keeps driveways passable when a rare freeze locks up the hillside streets above the falls. Tumwater's terrain pitches hard toward the river gorge, and a skim of ice on those grades turns an ordinary morning into a reason to stay home, so the crew runs plow and shovel over the steep stretches first before working outward toward the flatter lots near the highway. Ice here tends to form fast and quiet overnight, born of clear skies and cold air pooling low by the water, so a driveway that was only wet at midnight can be a sheet of glass by six. Clearing it back to bare asphalt, curb to curb, is the whole point: a truck that can back out safely, a walkway a kid can run down without a slip. The falls keep roaring through all of it, indifferent, while the block around them gets quietly usable again.
