Black Lake sits low enough southwest of downtown that cold air settles over it before it settles anywhere else in Olympia, and the yards along its shore are usually the last to thaw once a hard freeze moves through. South Bay Services starts its winter routes there, clearing driveways and walkways on the properties that hold onto ice longest, then working back toward town as the rest of the freeze burns off. A cold snap this far south on Puget Sound is rare enough that most winters bring only a night or two of it, but the lake's cold air pooling changes the math for the handful of properties right on the water.
