Some of the streets on Olympia's west side climb steep enough that a set of concrete stairs substitutes for a sidewalk, and those are exactly the spots where Make A Way earns its name every time a hard freeze glazes the steps overnight. The crew starts at the top of a property and works down, clearing stairs, landings, and walkways in the order someone would actually use leaving for work in the morning. A frozen set of steps on a steep lot is a different problem than an icy flat driveway, and Make A Way treats it that way, moving slower and more carefully where a slip means more than a scraped knee. Olympia's cold snaps off the Sound rarely last beyond a few days, but the west side's hills hold their ice on shaded faces well past the point the flat ground has cleared, which is why the company works those blocks first and finishes out toward Tumwater once the steep stuff is handled.
