Level Earthworks spends its summers grading building pads and driveways out toward the Black Hills, and its winters doing something close to the opposite: clearing the ice that collects in every low spot the company itself once graded flat. A driveway with the right pitch sheds water fine most of the year, but a hard freeze turns even a gentle grade into a slide if nobody's cleared it. The crew works the rural properties west of town first, where a long gravel driveway can hide a sheet of ice under a dusting of frost, then moves in toward the city for the shorter runs. By the second thaw the driveways are back to bare gravel and dirt, waiting on whatever grading job comes next.
