The cranberry bogs east of Ocean Park hold water and cold in a way the dune sand out toward the beach never does, so a winter storm here can freeze one side of town and leave the other just wet. Hill and Son Excavating runs its plow along the bog roads first, then works out toward the beach-access lanes where sand and old gravel make for a driveway that never quite freezes solid the same way twice. The Willapa Hills stand dark with timber behind all of it, holding back whatever wind comes off the bay, while the peninsula's low houses sit exposed to whatever comes off the ocean side instead. This crew has plowed both kinds of driveway enough times to know which one needs the blade lowered and which just needs a scrape.
