Whidbey Tree Works clears them off the turf before they mat down and smother it — raking and blowing the yard out, mowing while growth slows, cutting hedges back, putting beds in order for the wet months ahead. Grass living under island shade has its own appetite, so thin ground gets overseeded and the low corners get watched where rain stands after a storm. There is something plain and good about a lawn raked bare in autumn light, branches open above it and the ground breathing again. Come the first mild stretch of spring the green returns even, and the fall's work shows.
