The first mow of March is the one that changes a street. Grass in Normandy Park has been growing quietly all winter under the big-leaf maples, and then one dry morning the sound of a machine at seven o'clock tells the whole cul-de-sac the year has started. Lawn Army works that early shift — cutting, trimming out the winter's ragged corners, edging the drive back square, blowing the trimmings clear so nothing tracks indoors. Then comes the slower list: aeration to open compacted ground, overseeding the bare patches, a feeding that shows up as color two weeks on. Dew still on the boots, one yard finished, the rest of the neighborhood waiting.
