In January the snow geese come down onto Fir Island in white sheets, and the fields between Mount Vernon and the water go loud with them. Chavez Landscape spends the cold months on the quiet side of that noise — cutting back spent growth, clearing beds, hauling off storm-dropped branches, shaping hedges while they are dormant and honest. When the ground firms in March the mowing starts again and doesn't really let up until the maples stand bare. Edging, trimming, weeding and cleanups fill in the rest, week over week. Winter work is what makes an April yard look effortless, and that is the trade.
