Below the Highlands, where Longview's streets flatten out toward downtown, most of the drainage runs by gravity through pipe nobody thinks about — until a hard freeze locks a grate shut and the next rain has nowhere left to go. Sewer Monsters spends its year down in that system, and knowing which culverts back up first turns out to matter just as much on a cold morning, when the crew is out clearing catch basins and grates before ice can seal them for good. Driveways and lots along those low blocks get plowed in the same pass, since a frozen drain and an iced driveway tend to show up on the same address on the same morning. It keeps the flats from flooding the minute everything finally thaws.
