R.A. Long's original plan for this town still holds in its oldest blocks — wide boulevards, deep porches, houses built to last when the mill company put Longview together in the 1920s. Mr. Maintenance Man spends most weeks fixing the small things those old houses still need, and on the mornings after a freeze, that means walking the block with a shovel before the mail carrier and the school kids come through. Steps get salted, walkways get cleared down to concrete, and a stuck gate or a frozen spigot gets looked at along the way, since winter here rarely announces itself with more than one hard, quiet cold snap at a time. It is neighborhood work, one address after another, the kind that has a name attached because it should.
