October arrives on South Whidbey as a soft, steady rain that fills the Maxwelton Valley with the smell of wet alder. That is the season Western Landscaping Services works hardest: leaves down, beds tired, lawns soft underfoot and needing to be cut short enough to carry through the dark half of the year. The crew mows, edges, trims and clears the yard of everything the wind has been dropping on it since Labor Day. Out on the valley flats the fields go quiet early and a tidy yard reads clearly from the road, one bright rectangle in all that gray-green. Come back in April and the same lawn wakes up even, without the matted patches that a skipped autumn leaves behind. Doing it in the rain is simply part of living here.
