Dig anywhere near Gravelly Lake and you find the reason for the name — glacier-laid stone a foot down, everywhere, long predating the houses set above it. Coaxing a full lawn out of that is patient work, and The Family Landscaping takes it in order: mowing, edging, string trimming, seasonal feeding, weed control, aeration and dethatching so moss doesn't quietly win the shady side. In June the light hangs on past nine o'clock, and a yard cut that afternoon looks like something made on purpose, by hand, for the people who live there. On the clear evenings Rainier stands up over the rooftops to the southeast and the whole neighborhood looks briefly enormous. The work belongs to Lakewood — Lake City, Oakbrook, the streets running off Bridgeport Way — and carries out to Tacoma, Fircrest, University Place, Steilacoom and DuPont.
