When wet snow starts falling over Gravelly Lake in the last gray hour of daylight, Earth, Water & Stone treats it like a countdown. The heavy, coastal kind of snow that Lakewood gets is deceptively soft-looking and dangerously slick underfoot, and the crew would rather be out clearing driveways along the lakeshore in the dark than let it freeze overnight into something worse. Their trucks trace the curves around the water, blades down, headlights catching flakes that never quite pile up the way inland snow does but still turn a boat ramp or a sloped driveway into a hazard. By the time the porch lights come on around the lake, the pavement underneath is bare again, scraped down to wet asphalt that will freeze clean instead of rutted. There's real pride in that: a lake community that can still get out for milk or a night shift, because someone went around it once before the ice could set.
