Clean Crawls

About Clean Crawls

Before the sun clears the fir line above American Lake, Clean Crawls is already out scraping frost off driveways that back up to the water. Lakewood doesn't get much true snow, but when a cold snap off the Sound glazes the roads in black ice, it happens fast and it happens early — and that's exactly when this crew wants to be moving. They work the loops around the lake and the streets behind it, laying down ice melt before school buses and shift workers ever touch the pavement. There is a particular satisfaction in walking out to a driveway at 6 a.m. and finding it already bare and gritted, steam rising faintly where the sun catches it. It's a small win, repeated house by house, until the whole shoreline is safe to drive again.
