Head east out of Lake Stevens on the Granite Falls highway in November and the foothills come up dark and wet, maples along the shoulder letting go of the last of their color onto lawns that were green a week ago. Wolfe's Landscaping runs those properties through the closing weeks of the year — leaves off the turf, corners raked out, the final cut taken low enough to carry the grass through winter without matting. The rest of the season it is regular mowing, edging, and trimming on a rhythm the yard can count on. Bigger rural lots get the same finish as a town lawn, right down to the blown-clean driveway. Aeration and overseeding go in when the ground is soft enough to take them. A cleared, cut lawn under a bare maple, with the foothills going dark early, is the year put properly to bed.
