Lacey's old railroad depot still sits downtown as a small park, and the streets around it are some of the oldest paved ground in town, driveways and lots that have been resurfaced more than once over the years. Everson Asphalt Paving clears those same surfaces of snow when winter turns hard, working the driveways near the depot and the handful of small lots downtown that see steady foot traffic even in the cold. Older asphalt holds a chill longer than a fresh lay, and ice tends to linger there after the newer subdivisions out toward the prairie have already thawed. The crew works those cold spots first, scraping down to bare blacktop before moving on to the rest of the route. By midday, the depot grounds look ordinary again, snow banked at the tree line instead of sheeting the pavement.
