The ground around Kingston is glacial till under a thin skin of forest duff, and left alone it will grow moss far faster than it grows grass. Olympic Organics works with what's underfoot — topdressing with compost, feeding a lawn from the soil up, and mowing high enough that the turf shades its own roots. The routine still runs on the machine: regular cuts, cut edges, trimmed borders where lawn gives way to sword fern, and cleanups once the rain returns in earnest. Winter is for clearing the needle drop and letting the yard lie wet and dormant the way this coast intends. By the time the snowline creeps back up the Olympics, the grass has thickened on its own terms.
