October comes in hard off the canal, and by the time the wind reaches the road out toward Port Gamble it has plenty to say to the big maples. H&L Landscaping works that stretch of Kingston in the weeks when leaves outnumber daylight hours, getting them off the turf before a long rain glues them down. The rest of the year runs on rhythm — mowing, sharp edges along the pavement, trimming close around cedar trunks and mailbox posts. Fall cleanup here means honest hauling: leaves, fir needles, blown limbs, all of it loaded and gone. Grass breathes better for it, and comes back darker when March finally turns.
