Dirt Works spends its summers cutting and grading the gravel roads that climb into the timber above Kettle Falls, so come winter the company already knows every switchback and soft shoulder before the first real snow of the Kettle River Range even falls. Those roads pack down hard under repeated plowing, but a heavy, wet snowfall can still strand a truck on a grade that was bare gravel a week earlier. The crew works the hill roads first, pushing snow off to the low side where its own excavation work already shaped a place for it to go, then drops down into town to clear driveways and yards along the flatter ground near the highway. Winter out here means the same machines that moved dirt all summer now move snow instead, same hands on the same controls. Getting a family back down off their own hillside road safely, tire tracks straight and clean through what was solid white that morning, is worth the early start every time.
