About Veth's Landscape Services

The Green River Valley around Kent grew lettuce by the trainload before the warehouses came, and Veth's Landscape Services still works ground that remembers it, rich dark soil that holds moisture and then holds frost right along with it. When a cold snap turns that frost into something heavier, the crew clears driveways and walk paths across the flats, working fast because the valley floor ices evenly and stays that way once the sun drops behind the hills. It's a different kind of cold than the hillside neighborhoods get, flatter and more even, the kind that used to worry the old lettuce farmers as much as any snow. Clearing a driveway down to the same dark soil underneath, edge to edge, feels like a small nod to ground that's been worked for longer than the houses on it have stood. By evening the valley goes quiet and cold again, and the work holds until the thaw finally comes.
