Morning light climbs slow out of Zintel Canyon on the east side of Kennewick, and NAVA'S LANDSCAPING is usually already partway through its snow route by the time that light actually reaches a driveway. The work is modest and specific — a walk to a porch, three concrete steps, a stretch of driveway just wide enough for one car — repeated house after house on streets that don't get much attention otherwise. A shovel does most of the work here, with the plow blade saved for driveways too long or too packed down for that alone. A scattering of ice melt goes on the steps last of all, since that's the spot where somebody actually plants a foot getting the mail or heading out to a car in the cold. A street where every porch step has been cleared before anyone else is even out the door yet has a quiet all its own.
