Out past the edge of Kennewick toward Finley, where lots stretch into open acreage instead of standard yards, J&M Landscape and Earthworks runs equipment built for moving real ground — dirt in summer, snow in winter — down driveways long enough to need it. A dawn frost lays heavy and even over open fields out there, with none of the buildings in town to break it up or hold in a little warmth. The crew plows long gravel and paved drives alike, then finishes on foot with a shovel at the doorstep and the walk to an outbuilding or barn. Earthwork clients get the same call in winter as the rest of the year, since a driveway graded right in August is still the one that needs plowing come January. A cleared quarter-mile drive out to the road, ice melt down at both ends, is a bigger job out here than in town, and it shows in how early the crew starts each morning.
