South of Richland, the land opens into orchard rows and the first vineyard blocks of the Horse Heaven Hills, and the wind that comes down off that open country in winter carries real cold with it, the kind that turns irrigation lines brittle and driveways into sheet ice within an hour. Affordable Sprinklers, more used to laying out drip lines in July, shifts to clearing those same properties in the cold months — driveways, equipment yards, the gravel lanes between rows where a truck can't afford to slide. The Tri-Cities winter is short but sharp, a hard freeze followed by a bright, cold, cloudless week, and getting a lot clear before that sun turns overnight ice into a glaze is the whole job. Out here the properties are spread wide, acreage instead of city lots, so the plow runs longer between stops. When the wind finally lays down and the sky stays that flat Columbia Basin blue, the lanes are already clear and waiting for the next truck through.
