Advanced Irrigation & Pumps spends its summers keeping Kennewick's canals and sprinkler lines running toward lawns and the vineyard rows climbing the Horse Heaven Hills; once the ground finally freezes, the same crew turns to clearing the driveways and walkways around those same pump houses and back yards. A dawn frost clings heavy to the canal banks this time of year, and a truck is often out working a driveway before the sun climbs high enough to do anything about it. The routes are familiar — the same properties, the same gates, only ice waiting at the end of them instead of a broken sprinkler head. Ice melt gets scattered on the walk to a pump shed so a January service call doesn't start with someone slipping at the door. It is a short season of work wedged between two long dry ones, handled with the same close attention as everything else that keeps water moving through this valley.
