Along the West Side Highway, where Kelso's edge gives way to pasture and hay fields west of the river, frost collects in the low ground faster than almost anywhere else in town. NW Landscape Service clears the long farm driveways and gravel lanes out that way, working ahead of the afternoon light as the temperature drops and puddles left from the morning rain begin to skin over with ice. Real snow rarely reaches this part of the Cowlitz lowlands, but a hard freeze can turn a soft farm lane into an unworkable sheet of ice by evening chores. The crew knows which fence lines and low swales hold water longest and treats those spots first, before the school buses make their way back out the valley roads.
